**Posted by Imaginator at 4:02 PM

In some places, did you ever see several(normally 4~10) people sitting in a small corner, with some strange pieces of paper, and one of them may be holding an large hardcover book, talking some crazy thing that just happened in fantasy novel? Did you see some tiny but lively monster or knight model on their desk ? Did you see their laughing, shouting or tension for the rolling dice on the table? If you do, I can tell you, they might were playing TRPG.
People playing TRPG:
What's TRPG?
TRPG is short for table role playing game. It could be called as the fountainhead of all RPG games in nowadays. It's not rely on any hardware or software that like PC or other video games. You also cannot see any impressive visual effect or hear stereophonic boom sound. However, it could give you the best game experience, even better than the lastest game that using highest technology, because in TRPG, there is nearly nothing can restrain your imagination. Everything here is come from the perfect and correct shape in your mind.
There are many famous TRPG rules in the world, the most common one is D&D(Dungeons & Dragons), but also have many different system such as GURPS(Generic Universal RolePlaying System) , WOD(World of Darkness), COC(Call of Cthulhu) and so on.
Today , I am going to introduce D&D rule to your guys.Let's start from some basic system.

What's D&D?
D&D is a damn sell well TRPG system that now owned by Wizards of the Coast company. The main world background is a middle ages style space with a lot of fantasy elements. The newest version is 4th Edition, but I haven't played this one. My experience are mostly base on the previewed version, that 3.5th Edition.

The two position in D&D
A group of TRPGers normally are made of two kind of people.
The first kind is the person who want to talk a story or set an adventure. They in charge of all NPC, world setting and missions of the game world. They guide PC (Player Character! Not computer!) and judgement their activities by using rule book and their wisdom. In D&D, those people are called DM(Dungeons Master).
PS:This person have many different name in other systems, such as the ST(storyteller) in WOD and SK(secret keeper) in COC. They are exactly same means.
Another kind is players of course, they are normally more than one (just one DM in most situation). They main case is play a role, just one role. They are going to be the main characters in DM's story or campaign. They should control their character, make their activities according to the character's personality.

How to play?
Not just for D&D, most of TRPG need these things below:
*At lest 1 Rule Book, for DM maybe need a DM guide ,but for player the player handbook is enough. If you meet any problem or argument during game, it can solve your most question about rules.

*If you are a DM, prepare a story. Or you can use the campaign model form many D&D relative publish materials. That can be almost any title, from kill a evil dragon to a middle ages travel. To guide players enjoy the story will be your largest fun during game time.
*If you are a player, follow your handbook to create a character card. Before you filled all attribute, I suggest you have a think about what kind of character you would like to play. In TRPG, make a interesting person will have a lot more fun than build a person stiff and just can kill monster. Of course, if you can achieve both, you can be a great TRPG player.
*Some dices. As we know , there are so many random cases in our world and there is a such important thing called luck. To make the game world looks more real, to combine strength and luck together. The character card shows the strength of your character, than the dice shows your character's luck. DM will tell player when should they roll a dice and how, but players also can know most of these from rule book as well.
PS: In D&D and several other TRPG, they use the dice that have 20 sided (are you surprised?). Those systems are also called D20 system. However, the D10 and D6 system are also use widely. For example, GURPS use 6 sides dice and WOD use 10 sided dice. I like them very much as well!
*Last preparation is go and find somewhere clean, simple and won't be disturb often. When you playing TRPG, the most beautiful thing is image yourself is in a different world, but the worst thing is a phone call, knock door noise or loudly chatting of other people drag you back to the real word.

What's the process of D&D?
The game process is very hard to describe by my poor English, but I can recommend two movies to anyone who want know TRPG some more. They are recorded by D&D players, when I watched it , I fill it is so realistic to my experience.

Extra: About ERPG
Sometimes, people who have the same interesting can be split in anywhere. For TRPGers, always find enough friend play with me is a really problem. In China, TRPG is still a new things for most people. This situation maybe better in some large city, but in my hometown, TRPG players who living in this city even less than the number of my two hands' fingers. And everybody have their own life to handle. It's too hard to know each other to play together. So there is a long period of time even now, I played D&D online. People use E-mail/forum/IRC with dice plug-in to play TRPG by typing. And now we even have a professional software called maptool to play. This game method is slower than normal game because the restrain of typing speed, but both DM and players can make more literary describe to make the game better, and it easier to collect log as well. That's called ERPG(Email Role Playing Game/Network Role Play Game)
