Future canon games
Just to make sure that everybody is aware. The essence of your future canon game should be exactly that. It must be a game that will change future gameplay (like DOOM) or will be incredibly popular - launching a range of sequels (like MYST, SIMS or Resident Evil).
Your argument must explain and demonstrate the clear difference between the game you choose and other games that have come before. SO, for example, my argument around Assassins Creed would centre on the introduction of free-running movement in a game. It would mention the use of maps in a non-contemporary environment to re-create the cityscape used in the game.
Games that already exist in many generations (eg Street fighter) and are already canon games are not really suitable to choose...unless the new version of the game has a new, radical approach, that will change how things are then done.
future canon game (changed)
I'd like to change the game that I will choose for my 2nd report - I'd like to choose Tales of Monkey Island as also one of the canon games in the future(i realized that Little Big Planet will be a complex game for me to tackle><).
Rise of Video Games
The video on "Rise of Video Games" have mentioned a lot of significant things about games such as, how the games had evolved, how games reflect the culture of our times, how some games like Pacman was created, and the concept of some games where you are given the ultimate power and have to decide what to do with it. Here are some of the other interesting things that have caught my attention from this video:
- Miyamoto, who created the Donkey Kong video game and designed the Super Mario Bros., was an artist and aspiring storyteller. He wants to recreate the feeling of fun and excitement he had as a child. I think that was also how others, in our present time, came to choose a profession - most of us wants to work where we'll have fun and love for what we do. Miyamoto wants to be an entertainer in some ways - and I think that has inspired him to go into creating and designing those video games that will entertain people in spite of his lack of programming experience.
- Generation gap - Games / Technology has created a gap between generations. Some parents (not all) in the past, had felt some kind of fear. They could not understand the new technologies that were emerging. They feel like they were left behind and were very much against it. Some also feel that these video games that were emerging were of no good to their children - so they prevent their children from playing these games (haha, sounds like my parents were one of those back then). But I think parents were now more open to these changes and innovations being made.
- Advantages of video games - Video games can be viewed not just as games. They are also a form of art, and an area for expression. Some people were against it for the violence it projects. But games has this virtual world where it is a safe place to express some of your feelings (like anger - in shooting games) and wherein your actions will have no consequences in real life - there is no consequence of truly hurting/shooting someone because you are in a real world - nobody's in there. Another important advantage of playing games is that games can make us feel closer to one another - the experience of playing games together brings out a sense of support and togetherness (even if there is competition).
- Disadvantages of games - Violence that results from playing video games usually happens when one becomes irresponsible and can no longer balance his life and separate the virtual world from the real world. Others had become so addicted to it, that that when they got to get back living in the reality - they get so depressed.
Future Canon Game Discuss
I decide to choose Dragon Age: Origins for my second report. RPG hooray!
history of video game
after we watched document movie aoubt history of video game, in just realize now, the game not just a game any more, it's about culture, history, business, even more. since 1958 the first video game in to the world, around 50 years later, the development of video game was very fast. the game from simple tennis game which just one button to control to now, we have different consoles, and use different controller to simulate different situations. by this movie, we know background story about game industry, how the canon game be created, how the player enjoy the game, how the game effect people's life. after we watch these movie, we saw the game histroy passed by time, the develop of different types of game, we can also imagine what's game will be like in the future, in thought it's the biggest goal in the movie.
Canon game in the future
i would like to write about "Sims" in my next report, which is canon game in the future in my mind.
future canon game
I would choose "Little Big Planet" as the game that I'm going to report because I think it will be one of the canon games in the future...
The World of Warcraft (for 10 days)
World of Warcraft is a very successful and popular multiplayer online role playing game. I've heard a lot about it from other people and have seen a lot of them playing this game back then. It was popular around the world. Yet, I've never tried to play this before. I've seen their cinematic years ago and I find it really interesting and intriguing.
This has been my first time to experience playing this game. (I'm not really good at games v.v)...
I named my character Febx, and have chosen it to be a warlock. I was able to reach only until Level 5 for the 10 days trial.
The initial stages of the game are all about gaining experience and improving your character. WOW was easy to learn, even for those who are inexperienced like me. To level up, you have to gain experience by accepting and completing quests. It will require you to take an adventure, develop your skills, loot from the corpses, buy and trade some stuffs. The game isn't depressive because it wasn't that hard to play and it's easy to get back to life/resurrect whenever you die (I got killed for about 3-4 times)..
The visuals and story were entertaining, but there comes at some point when I find the cycle of completing the quest a bit boring: asking for a quest - accomplishing the quest - going back from whom you have accepted the quest - then accepting another quest...and the cycle remains the same. A lot of these needs to be done in the early stages of the game in order to gain experience and level up.
I also encountered/have seen a lot of other characters (female warlocks), that looks exactly like my character - same suit, same hairstyle, same color, same face - but at least we have different names. Since millions of other players are playing this game, having same looks can't be prevented in spite of being able to customize your character.
Overall, i like the game for its story, visuals/graphics, theme, the characters and setting, the concepts, and the sound. Another interesting thing about this game is that you can interact with other players, some of which are doing weird stuffs like dancing and showing off. The theme and story they put on the game was very excellent, and there's really a big world in world of warcraft to discover.
The game i am going to write about in my report
My days in World of Warcraft
The unbelieveble history of video games
Review: Rise of the video games
In rise of the video game series, the first two chapters are talking about the developing history of video games.
Video game industry is a branch that come from computer and programming science at the beginning. However, some people find they can use those hard and ugly computers to make some entertainment. So they did try to do that, and those precursors lay a foundation of this creative industry.
I think these two chapters show us the processing of video game developing in about three different but connected accepts, technical, performance and target marketing.
As we read before, one of the standard to differ video games with other graphic media like movie and books is interactivity. The technical accept is one of the most important element about game developing. From huge box machine to small famicom, from a handle with one runner that use to play tennis to modern game controller or keyboard, even those professional simulation equipments like steering wheel or control stick of plane. The technical improvement can really change the way people playing game. Furthermore, this also changes players' experience and the maximum potential of these game industry.
Following the hardware and software improvement, the performance of video games become more and more delicacy and realistic. 8bit console famicom allowed Shigeru Miyamoto to make Mario with simple large nose, 16bit console MD let SEGA created cool speedy Sonic, and then 32bit console Playstation with CD-ROM lead the whole game industry from 2d to 3D. Now, PS3 and XBOX360 show player a great picture of HD. The virtual world is becoming truly and its influence are growing up in creditable speed.
The video game marketing are growing as well. Before it become something can make money, video game was just a little toy for a small group of scientists enjoy themselves. Then, PONG make the first found of game industry. The world had a tiny change since that, but this change would caused a blizzard of human live. Many shooting games were released, more boys' attention were attracted by games. Later on, packman open the gate of female customers and make video games become more common. On the other hand, computer game like Mystery House start from another point, were welcome by people who have more patient and eduction. Designers and businessman can always find something new and haven't been discovery, just like now Nitendo use touch screen to DS and use new controller to attract more "casual players".
In the third chapter of these videos, it have a serious discuss about the effect of video games, especially first person shooting games might affect young and children in violent and blood accept.
How the game visual and performance development makes people worry about humanity and social problem. I really like the conclusion of this chapter, Ken Perlin, a computer science professor describe computer games as a pen. People can use the pen to write something, that might save many people's live, but might send many people to death as well. They did use the pen's power, but there is nothing to do with the pen. Games are just like any tools else, people just can use it to communicate with others and what information they want to show is not matter with the game technology at all.
My WOW travel and search report
OK, let's talk about world of warcraft.
I created two characters in my training account, both of them are pretty girls but with different face and occupation.
The human girl is called Insodream, she is a warlock. When i first time use this character, there were 2 male characters try to talk to me. One is full of vulgarity and another one invite me join his team. So, the first experience I learnt from MMORPG is, females are always more welcome than males.
The landscape and art style of human country is very close to normal middle ages city. Great castles, farms and church make people think Europe. Player's initial status are one of new militia of northshire abbey. However, in WOW, different face will have different born place. Every face has their different style and surface, even hobbies and languages.
My another character, Miss Inaodream, is a night elf druid. Her born place is a small elf village, Teldrassil. This place in in very deep forest, all buildings are a part of tree. The main color of this area are purple, looks very mythic and beautiful.
I think one of elements why world of warcraft make such a huge success in worldwide is its extensive meticulous setting. Blizzard tricky but resourceful collect a lot marrow from history and fantasy cultures. No just human and elf, I did a small research. In WOW, every face have its history or fantasy prototype. Human, elf, dwarf, undead ,orc they are frequenter who appeared in other fantasy world. However, we also can find something similar from world history. Human's style are come from middle age Britain . Orcs society construction is like Mongol army at Genghis khan time. All elf have French accent and all Draenei's speaking sounds like Germany.
Dwarfs and Gnomes are two huge shining point in WOW, their culture are more close to science fiction more than fantasy. They use steam technology to improve their weakness in body. Especially gnomes, most of them are crazy scientist. That makes WOW more colorful and interesting.
The basic game processing is very simple. In most time, player can receive missions from different NPCs. Then player follow the clues and guide to finish the mission, get exp and money. Player can use money to by items and equipment to prepare next mission or just meet his or her collecting meet. However, Blizzard's designers set a main story line to every small mission. For example, every time you almost clear all missions in one area, one of the important NPC will give you a new mission. That mission is very possible to send a mail to the lead of another area, or the black hand of something might be in another area. They give player a reason of travel. In addition, as I mentioned before, every face have different feature, that make people really enjoy this long long travel. Different place have different surface and NPCS, all face even has their own language. Since LV1 to 10, My warlock from northshire explore to Stormwind city, but is just a tiny part of this whole fantasy land. The curiosity will cause player keep going, and also cause this game become more and more popular.
At last, the original sound tracks of world of warcraft are so epic and impressive. It's really can make people forget the fact and falls into a different fantasy world.
World of warcraft, is a game with its depth.
